After watching Panchayat, I was again on a hunt for another web series that Vibhu (my 7-year-old boy) can also enjoy. Luckily I found one. It was again a neat and uncomplicated one. No abusive language, no inappropriate talks, and full of comedy, it was really fun to watch "Gullak" with Vibhu. Set in a small town in North India, this web series is about a middle-class Mishra family and their day-to-day struggles.
Being a 90s kid, I have seen the craze for clay piggy banks, typically called Gullak. Be it any fair or festival, buying a clay piggy bank was a custom in families of North India (UP) during the early 90s. The Series is named Gullak as in the show, a clay piggy bank, is the narrator of the plot. The Mishra family includes a giving husband, Santosh Mishra; a sarcastically speaking wife, Shanti Mishra; and their two sons. Then there are nagging neighbors, demanding relatives, everyday life struggles, and lots of humor with all. The performance by everyone in the cast is so authentic with the typical Up wala accent that the fans wants to go ahead and hug them.
It’s hard to say who does a better job or which character is more important. Vibhu's favorite is happy-go-lucky younger son of Mishra family, Aman. He is a school-going boy and his battles with his elder brother make Vibhu go gaga over him. Many times we both, mother and son, went mad laughing over the incidents of the show while watching. We both admired their way of talking, their attitude towards problems, and their bonding. The show is so relatable like it is a story of my hometown where we have families like this. In fact my extended family is like them.
This web series shows that how tier-two towns and the mohallas have more life in them than any big city ever come across. It also touches upon weighty issues like financial difficulties in lower-middle-class families, unemployment, and ignorance towards the woman of the house. However, it smoothly glides over all of them without making us serious. One must watch Gullak to realize how enjoying life can be despite all chaos and family drama. The web series has two seasons launched till now. Vibhu and I both are desperately waiting for the next.
