Well, all of us must have heard about this saying which helps us identify our true friends and also helps in keeping away from false friends. This I believe is probably the real sense of this saying. Isn't that? However, in most friendship examples I find this saying inspiring a different sense of friendship.
Instead of waiting for the hard time to judge the loyalty and sincerity of friends, people have started making friendship with only those who can serve them in need. For example,I remember when I was a child, someone who had a car in our society was a friend of most people. The car owner uncle and his family was invited at everyone's party. The car owner was greeted with morning/evening wishes by most others. In short, everybody wanted to be a friend of the one who has a car so that they can ask for their car when in need. Now, if the car owner does not refuse to give his car to others in need, he is a good friend; else, not. Because we know that a friend in need is a friend indeed.
The case remains same in college where all the people coming to college by their own bikes have a really long list of friends, both boys as well as girls. Out of that long list of friends, most are in need of bike someday or the other, and ask their bike owner friend to lend their bike. So, if the bike owner boy does not refuses to give his bike to those in need, he is a good friend; else, not. Because of the same guideline.
Thanks to reliance jio that calls and data are affordable now, otherwise I remember how friends used to ask for our phones to make an urgent call and check where you are a friend indeed or not. Though we still have things ranging from nailpaint to eyeliner, tops to earrings and handbags to belts which can be asked from a friend in need to judge whether you are a friend indeed.
Despite everything, friendship has no perfect guideline or rule to follow. People who are not our relatives but are liked by us are our friends. We enjoy their company, we can share our feelings with them, we understand them and they also understand us. Your friend may not be your brother, sister, father mother, cousin, uncle, anty or life partner but he or she can definitely make you feel no absence of any of these.
Friendship is divine. I don't deny that a friend in need is a friend indeed, but I truly criticize making friends just because of the things they own and can lend us. Those who do so are friend with greed!
